Artists & Illustrators Magazine - November 2016 Issue

'How to loosen up your style'

In the November issue of Artists & Illustrators, Hannah Ivory Baker explained how to loosen up your painting style – here we share one of her lightning speed demos for inspiration

3 Top Tips

1. Place paint with confidence and be prepared to leave a mark alone the moment it has been applied to the chosen surface.

2. When working in my studio from reference photographs or sketches, I always try and approach it with the same attitude, as if trying to capture everything with a sense of urgency before it disappears.

3. Take a small board and brushes that are much larger than you think you’ll need, this way, when loaded with paint you will be able to create all sorts of big sweeping marks. There is nothing looser than recording colour, tone and detail in just a few movements.
